There are various reason to join your local self-storage association. Bringing people together in a common setting is always an opportunity to teach, learn and share. SSA meetings organized by the self-storage association offer a variety of vendors and individuals offering their products, services and knowledge.

In February, I attended the Florida Self Storage Association show and my team had a booth at the show. The Florida show had plenty of vendors, self-storage owners and managers wanting to meet each other, ready to share knowledge and learn from each other. I have also attended smaller ones in others states as well. Both big and small have proved to be worthwhile. The association is not all about the show, but the show is an annual gathering that is well planned.

Self Storage Associations, in general, offer numerous benefits for individuals or businesses involved in the self-storage industry. Association meetings vary in size and in the amount of vendors versus individual owners or those looking to own in attendance. If you are looking to enter the industry, I suggest joining an association should one of the earlier actions actions you should take. Regardless, they are always a great place to meet others in the industry. Here are 7 reason to join a self-storage association.

  1. Associations plan various events to bring together people associated with or directly involved in self storage. These Networking Opportunities can be bankers, contractors, software companies, roofers, insurance companies or even franchise opportunities, etc. I personally met up with several providers of specific products I was hoping discuss further. You may be working to resolve a specific matter with your development or existing location and you will be more likely to find the contact you need.

  2. Members in the self-storage association gain an advantage to developing access to the latest and the greatest Resources & Information. They may send out a monthly/quarterly newsletter or hold smaller meetings, zoom calls or other gatherings to share up-to-date info with you.

  3. Laws sometimes change and effect the self storage industry. Being up to date on Legal Matters is important. It is also important that those with common interests band together to help support their best interests. Large groups can effect political outcomes. Often, there is a member with legal experience to assist on various matters that arise or the association will have somebody attend to speak on matters within the relevant State.

  4. Knowledge is power! A common phrase that holds true today. It is vital that the members stay abreast on the latest products and technology. Simple sharing of knowledge will better inform you and provide you the "top secret" information to be the leader in your industry. Sharing experiences between owners and operators of what works, and what does not, may save you the pain of learning the hard way.

  5. Attending meetings and knowing others will build your Industry Recognition & Credibility. Others in the industry will begin to recognize you and become more familiar with your connection to self storage. You may be offering a product, program or service that that people will learn that you represent. Maybe you can become a "star" in the industry! Successful owners also become well known and an example to others to possibly follow. Your, shall we say notoriety, be a symbol that can be appealing to customers, investors, and business partners.

In general, joining a self-storage association provides you a number of advantages in the self-storage industry. Primarily, doing so can improve you overall knowledge of the industry and provide you numerous contacts that can provide examples to follow and to learn from.
