Question: How many Acres of land does it take to build self-storage?
Marc: It typically takes 2 – 15 usable acres. Don't forget you have to subtract non-useable land like wetlands, 100-year flood plain, steep slopes, etc. Strict zoning can require more land as well.

Here is a final site plan of our Storaage Authority Buck Road, NJ facility that just opened. It took more than 6 acres because a large chunk was wetlands, and the town had a maximum building size. It is open and ready to join the latest Era of self storage - luxury self storage. Check it out here: www.StorageAuthorityBuckRoad.com

Question: Can you be a bit more specific on why such a large range of parcel sizes?
Marc: I assume you want to build a good-sized self-storage ( 80,000 gross SF+_, which will allow most people to retire when they fill the facility at premium rates.
2 acres = 3-4 story building
2-4 acres = part single-story and part multi-story
5- 6 acres all single story
15 acres = self-storage & significant RV/boat Storage
