why I hope self storage is not your new Year's resolution. And My 2 New Year resolutions.

Make sure you get to the end to understand why a get started in self storage is such a bad New Year resolution.

My Resolution #1 Stop wasting so much time scrolling on social media.

I worked the last 2 weeks but like many, I took the liberty to relax quite often. Instead of a 15-minute coffee break, I found myself mindlessly scrolling Instagram, LinkedIn, Facebook, etc for an hour at a time with my coffee. I bet I spent at least 8 hours a week waiting my time.

This is a great resolution because I can start today. It is not complicated. I do not need help or a written plan. it does not cost any money and there are no risks. And my fallback plan works as well. I can always scroll during my TV time after 9 pm

And an extra day a week is a huge bonus immediate bonus to do anything I want!

My Resolution #2 Stay healthy and keep the 20 pounds off I lost in the last 3 months.

This is also an easy but important New Year's Resolution for me. Even this easy resolution needed a written plan:

Walk 5,000 to 10,000 steps a day vs the old random walks ( 10,000 steps/day during diet.)

Wine 2 times a week vs the old 6-7 times a day. (1- 2 times a week during diet

No binge snacks every night of the week. ( same during diet)

Eat responsible portions for breakfast lunch & dinner (deficit calories during diet)

Eliminate processed foods and eat good meats, fish, fruit, and vegetables. ( same during diet)

Keep learning about being healthy. (same during diet)

This resolution is much easier than the impossible " loose weight New Year's resolution" that so many people make (and fail) because they are overweight and a New Year is starting. You need a big reason to lose weight and a well-defined written plan otherwise we know it will never happen.

Here is my reason - I love my wife & we want to be healthy and enjoy the many years to come.

A year ago my wife said to me "Marc looks like your belling is getting bigger." I thought about a diet but never acted on it. Three months later she said, "Seriously you need to do something about your pot belly". My wife GP can get away with that because she is fit and only means well and is trim.

Then about 6 months ago my daughter-in-law commented on my shape. Of course, I thought that was rude and socially wrong. But she was right and I decided it was time. It took me three more months to start my 3-month diet.

Knowing I needed help I hired a coach for exactly 3 months. The best $3,000 I ever spent.

Why I hope your New Year's Resolution wasn't to get started in the self storage business.

Self storage is much too big of a decision to be a New Year's Resolution. It takes a well-thought-out written game plan to be successful. Do you have a written game plan?

It takes 4 things to do well in self storage: Time, Cash, Expertise, and proven systems. Do you know how much of each of these items it takes to be successful in self storage? If not I would consider making your New Year's resolution finding about each of these items by Jan 31, 2024.
